Description:
The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is a national-level management entrance exam conducted by XLRI (Xavier School of Management), Jamshedpur, on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI). The XAT score is used for admission to MBA/PGDM programs in XLRI and many other top business schools across India.
Key Features of XAT:
- Purpose: XAT is primarily used for admission to management programs at XLRI and other participating business schools in India.
- Global Recognition: XAT is recognized by over 160 management institutes across India, including prominent ones like XLRI, SPJIMR, XIMB, IMT, TAPMI, and others.
- Eligibility:
- Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university.
- Final-year students can also apply, provided they complete their degree before the commencement of the program.
- Mode: XAT is a computer-based test (CBT).
Exam Structure (2026):
The XAT exam consists of two parts:
Part 1: Aptitude Test (170 minutes)
Sections:
- Verbal and Logical Ability: Tests reading comprehension, critical reasoning, grammar, and verbal skills.
- Decision Making: Unique to XAT, this section tests your ability to make sound decisions in complex situations, often through case studies.
- Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation: Covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data interpretation, similar to other management exams but with an emphasis on problem-solving.
Part 2: General Knowledge (10 minutes)
It covers current affairs, static GK, business, economics, sports, etc. Unlike other sections, the GK section is not considered for percentile calculation but is used during the selection process.

Marking Scheme:
- Total Number of Questions: The exam typically has 95 questions.
- Scoring: Each correct answer is awarded 1 mark, while there is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. Additionally, 0.10 marks are deducted for every un-attempted question beyond 8 un-attempted questions. GK section has no negative marking.
Features of XAT 2026:
- Decision-Making Section: This section is unique to XAT and tests candidates’ ability to handle ethical dilemmas and real-life business situations. It requires analytical reasoning and sound judgment.
- General Knowledge: The GK section, though not part of the percentile calculation, is used in the later stages of selection for programs that consider XAT scores.
- Essay Writing:Â Scrapped from the exam; will now be conducted during the XLRI selection process.
- Reduced GK Questions:Â The number of questions in the GK section has been reduced from 25 to 20.
- No Sectional Time Limits:Â There is no sectional time limit in Part 1, giving candidates flexibility in managing their time.
Test Availability:
- Frequency: XAT is conducted once a year, usually in early January.
- Cost: The registration fee for XAT is typically around ₹2,000 (subject to changes).
Selection Process:
- XAT Score: Your XAT score is used as a basis for shortlisting candidates for further rounds.
- Group Discussion (GD), Personal Interview (PI), and/or Written Ability Test (WAT): Shortlisted candidates are invited to these rounds, depending on the institute’s admission process.
- Final Selection: Based on a composite score of XAT performance, GD/PI/WAT, academic records, and work experience.
Preparation Strategy:
- Verbal and Logical Ability: Practice reading comprehension, sentence correction, critical reasoning, and grammar. Regular reading and solving practice tests can help improve performance.
- Decision Making: Focus on understanding case-based scenarios and developing an approach to ethical dilemmas, business situations, and decision-making problems. Practicing past XAT papers is essential.
- Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation: Revise fundamental mathematical concepts and practice a variety of questions on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and DI. Speed and accuracy are key.
- General Knowledge: Stay updated with current affairs, especially in business, economics, and politics. Reading newspapers, magazines, and yearbooks can be helpful.
- Essay Writing: Practice writing essays on a wide range of topics, focusing on structuring your arguments clearly and coherently.
